Assisting continuing students

At the moment the plan for assisting continuing students with introduction to the Hub is as follows:

·        CAP will develop a short PowerPoint presentation which academics will be able to use when introducing their continuing student to their Hub areas. We will circulate the PowerPoint via this blog as soon as it is available (http://qmuhub.blogspot.co.uk/);

·        Continuing students are welcome to attend any of the sessions being run for new students in induction week and week 1;

·        The school office will be running sessions for all students nearer to assessment time – focussing on the process of submitting to the assignment drop-box. We will advertise dates as soon as we have these.

Transferring discussion instructions from WebCT

A question raised at a recent workshop related to exporting instruction materials from discussions in WebCT to the Hub.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to download or export any part of the discussion area from WebCT to the Hub.

We recommend, if you wish to reuse instructions from previous discussion areas in WebCT, that you copy the text and save to a word document - you can then paste the text from this document into your new discussion areas in the Hub when you are ready to do so.

New Hub Login Screen

New Hub Login Screen

We have now uploaded a customised login page for hub@qmu.

Once students return for the new academic year, we will announce a competition allowing our students to design a logo for the hub@qmu.
We also anticipate staff and students to submit photographs from across the campus to allow a fresh look to the login page on a regular basis.

The login page still requires work and will change as the hub@qmu evolves, but this should be the basic structure.

Please let us know if you have any questions, suggestions or feedback regarding the login page by emailing us as hub@qmu.ac.uk

Internet Explorer and Other Supported Technologies

Internet Explorer and Other Supported Technologies
Our move to The Hub has introduced new possibilities for our VLE and also has had an impact on the technology required to access The Hub. Blackboard have released a full table showing the various configurations which are compatible or incompatible with The Hub. This table can be found by clicking here.

Please note:

1.        Internet Explorer 6 and 7 will not work with The Hub. These are old technologies which are no longer supported by Microsoft. This may impact on users working from NHS facilities running these older browsers. To find out what browser version you are running, click on the Help menu at the top of the screen and click on About. This will tell you which version of the browser you are running.

Anyone having issues accessing The Hub from home, should consider using Citrix Remote Access; more information can be found by clicking here.

2.       The Hub requires Java 6 to work. Clicking on the link below will check your version of Java.

If the grey box contains Java Version: 1.6.xxxx you will not need to change your version of Java. Do not use Java version 1.7.

If you have any questions, please contact hub@qmu.ac.uk

Notifications from your Hub@QMU modules

By default all staff and students will receive email notifications in certain specific circumstances. These include;
  • when an assignment is due
  • when an assignment is submitted
  • when an assessement is submitted
  • when an announcement is posted
These email notifications are set as defualt but can be managed and turned on and off as required for all or some module areas. To access the notifications settings first click on the My Places icon in the very top-right of any blackboard area.

The panel that appears conatins a number of options :

The Edit Notifications Settings link takes you to a page where you have 3 options:
  1. Edit General Settings
    This option allows you to choose whether to receive email notifications individually or as a daily digest. You can also choose when to remove notifications from the module and whether you wish to receive due-dates reminders X number of days before any due date.
  2. Bulk Notifications Settings
      This option shows the default notifications applied to all module areas. You can use this options to change the defaults for all or some of your module areas. You can turn off the existing email notifications or add further email notifications. It is important to note that the Bulk Notifications Settings always shows the institutional defaults. Any changes made to notifications will be reflected in the individual courses listed in the "Edit Individual Course Settings" option.
  3. Edit Individual Course Settings
    This option displays the current notifications settings, reflecting any changes that have been made, for all your individual modules. Individual module notifications can also be edited from here. If a module's notifications settings have been changed from the institutional defaults, an exclamation mark symbol will be displayed next to that module.
