Printing Discussions from the Hub

Although the Hub is designed for viewing and engaging in discussions online, there are occasions when you may need to print a discussion to hard copy. Provision for this is made through the Collect button, which allows you to collect together multiple postings and then print directly from the Collection window. However, a bug has been identified whereby the discussions in some cases run off the side of the page in the printout. This bug should be repaired in upgrades to the Hub in the summer of 2013, however, until then 2 suggestions to avoid this problem are outlined here:

Option 1.    Copy and paste to Word

When you used the Collect button to collect all your discussion post together, click the print preview button. This will open a new Collection Window and a Print window too. Close the print window and maximise the collection of posts. Right-click and choose select all and then right-click again and select Copy.

Open a new Word document and right-click in the document. Under Paste Options you will see 3 icons – choose the middle one Merge Formatting. You will get a message:
“This operation will require copying many different styles – do you want to use Normal style instead”. Choose Yes and this will copy all the posts into Word.

Advantages:

·         Easy to do
·         Standardizes the font size
·         Easy to reformat the font size once copied
·         Posts do not run off the page
Disadvantages

·         May require a bit of editing to get rid of spaces and to make post content more distinct from info about posts, etc
Option 2.    Printing Collection from Hub after changing margins

Again, first use the Collect button to collect the required posts and click print preview button. Close the Print options window and maximise the Collection of posts.

Right-click anywhere on the collection window and choose Print Preview. You then need to make some adjustments to the margins and orientation:

Click the cogwheel icon

Change the orientation to landscape and change all the margins to 10

Click OK and then click the printer icon from the Print Preview screen to print.

Advantages:

·         All formatting is same as viewing on line – no need to rearrange
·         Posts do not run off the page
Disadvantages

·         A bit fiddly
·         Font sizes are still erratic dependant on the font size of the original post
·         No option to reformat

Where to store your answers when creating quizzes

When you create a Test in the Hub, each question type will display an answer field as well as a question field. If you have answers which you will use to assist you in marking you should enter these in the Answer Field.

When creating questions you are also presented with an Instructor Notes field. This field can be used to record information about the question which can be recalled if you reuse the question again. Please note, however, that the Instructor Notes are not visible when grading so if you have added set answers to this field you will not be able to access them whilst marking.

When you have finished marking and you edit the test options, you have the choice as to whether to release the correct answer field to students when they get their results and feedback - if you do not want them to see your own set answers then you do not have to make these visible.

Workshop 16/1/13 - assessing online discussions

Wednesday 16th January 2013

10.15am – 12.30pm

We have been using online discussions to support learning and teaching for many years. Much has been learnt in this time about online behaviours and we have developed scaffolding and support models. However, one aspect that is still often debated is the assessment of online discussions. In this workshop, we shall discuss and explore some models and how they may inform assessment strategies. We provide exemplars and guidance on implementing an effective and sustainable approach for you, and your learners. This workshop is run by Jacquie Kelly from JISCinfoNet.

To book this workshop go to:

Student View Tool

Before the start of Semester 1 the Student View tool was removed from the Hub as it was identified that the tool only worked with areas that were currently available to students. Once the semester started the tool was turned on again, with the caveat that it would not work with Semester 2 modules until they became available to students in January.

After consulting with the Building Block developers we have been able to put a fix in place, which now allows the Student View tool to work with Semester 2 modules. Unfortunately, the fix has meant that the Control Panel will appear when the Student View is active. This is more of a cosmetic change due to the way roles are checked within the Blackboard system.  Staff should note that the control panel in this instance has very few items available and those which are, are highly restricted.

With the exception of the control panel (which students never see), the tool mirrors the standard student role exactly and provides exactly the same level of interaction, including being able to complete tests and assignments.

If you have any questions, please contact Hub@qmu.ac.uk.

Mobile Apps for Hub@QMU

Blackboard Mobile Apps Launched for Hub@QMU

Mobile apps are now available for Android, iPad and iPhone devices.
The mobile apps afford a number of benefits for mobile access of the Hub especially communication and notifications, but it is important to note that there are also some things that the apps cannot do. Guides and recommendations for students and tutors, together with a list of the different apps’ respective functionalities are available here: http://www.qmu.ac.uk/cap/Hub/mobile.htm

The apps cost $1.99 per year or $5.99 for lifetime use. UK prices are dependant on the current exchange rate but equate roughly to £1.50 and £4.50 respectively. The apps can be downloaded from the Google Play Store (android) or App Store (iPad and iPhone). After downloading the app you should search for Queen Margaret University and it is at this point you will be charged if you wish to complete the purchase.

The Blackberry app is not available for Hub@QMU.

Please note: the apps are an add-on to the core web-based Hub functionality and in this respect are not essential – you do not need an app to take part in or complete your programme of studies. The Hub is generally accessible from any mobile device without an app; however ease of use of will depend on the screen size of the device and the browser capabilities

For further information please contact hub@qmu.ac.uk

Personalised Module timetables now available in The Hub!!

It is now possible for users to access all their module timetables from the one screen! If you cannot see the link on you’re my Hub page, click on Add module and click Add under the Personalised Module Timetables section. This will then appear on your My Hub page.

The link will be available to all QMU staff & students; however, will only be relevant to those modules being taught at QMU’s Musselburgh Campus

Student guide to using turnitin

Following on from the recent issues with turnitin and the need to re-create turnitin links, our student guide to using turnitin has now been updated. This reflects the slightly different appearance and small changes in functionality of the new turnitin links in the Hub.

The student guide is available here:

You can also access the student guide via:

·         the Effective Learning Service web page: http://www.qmu.ac.uk/els/Turnitin.htm

Update on Turnitin

Over the last few days, we have been experiencing issues with accessing Turnitin through the Hub. After discussions with iParadigms who supplies Turnitin, a technical issue has been identified with the link between the Hub and Turnitin. To overcome this technical issue,  it will be necessary for the links to Turnitin to be re-created. The CAP and School Office will be re-creating the links to Turnitin and hope to have this work completed by early next week. If you have students who are submitting in the next week, please contact Hub@qmu.ac.uk and we will prioritise your area to ensure there is a fully functioning link to Turnitin for students.

Please note: as a consequence Turnitin will appear slightly different in the Hub and the CAP will be providing updated documentation shortly.

For further information, please contact turnitin@qmu.ac.uk.

Announcements for second semester modules - add dates!

If you add an announcement to a second semester module, it will be sent as an email to students now. However, the students will not be able to access the announcement in the Hub because the module is not yet available.

Add a date (adaptive release) to the announcement and the email about the announcement will be sent on that date.

Please note: second semester modules are available in the Hub from 7th January 2014.

Further information, contact hub@qmu.ac.uk

Student View

The student view tool has now been enabled again on all Hub modules. This tool is useful to give a more accurate display of exactly what a student what see, particularly when you are designing sign-up sheets, assessments and discussions. The tool can be accessed through Course Tools>Student View. To return to your instructor view click the link at the bottom of the menu called Teacher View.

The way the tool works is that it creates a demo student in the users for the course so you are seeing what any student would see. The limitation of the tool is that it will not work on modules that are not currently available to students. e.g. Semester 2 modules. Please do not use the tool with unavailable module areas. Semester 2 modules are available from 6th January and the tool will work on these areas after this date.

Why do I, as a tutor, keep receiving emails from the Hub?

All tutors  receive a daily email digest at 9 pm which collates notifications from any module that they have access to regarding:
·         Announcements sent;
·         Assignment Dropboxes that have been created or have had dates amended;
·         Student submissions to an assignment dropbox or assessment (eg online quiz).
You will also receive a separate email from the Hub:
·         When an announcement is sent from the Hub and a tutor has selected: SEND A COPY OF THE ANNOUNCEMENT IMMEDIATELY. This will ignore the daily digest option.
·         When the send email tool is used and you have been selected to receive an email.
To reduce emails:
·         Ask other tutors in your areas in the Hub to use the option: SEND A COPY OF THE ANNOUNCEMENT IMMEDIATELY only when essential.
·         Check that you have selected email notifications to be sent as a daily digest.
To ensure that your email notifications are sent as a daily digest, log into the Hub and on the My Hub Page click on:
·         the My Places icon in the very top-right.
·         Edit Notifications Settings
·         Edit General Settings
Edit General Settings allows you to choose whether to receive email notifications individually or as a daily digest.
You can also choose to remove particular types of notification from the digest (e.g. if a student submits an assignment) by editing the notification settings for that module or all modules. To do this, from the My Places above, click on either Edit Individual Course Settings or Bulk Notifications Settings and remove the email notifications selection for a module or modules.

For further details please see:
If you would like further information, please book a 20-minute slot at the Hub drop-in sessions. Details at: https://sites.google.com/a/qmu.ac.uk/hub/workshops.

Announcements and email

Announcements in the Hub are linked to QMU email. If you create an announcement in a module in the Hub, anyone on the module (students, teaching assistants, tutors) will automatically receive:

·         An email notification;

·         An update when they log into the Hub on the Announcements area on the My Hub Page;

·         An update when they log into your module in the Hub in student notifications.

If you have added a link to the announcements tool on the left-hand side menu in your module, students will also be able to see announcements there.

When creating an announcement, you are provided with an option:

Send a copy of this announcement immediately

This means that everyone on the module in the Hub (tutors, teaching assistants and students) will immediately receive an email of the announcement. This will over-ride all settings that users have made, for example, a daily digest of emails from the Hub.

It is recommended that the option to send an email immediately is used only in particularly urgent cases, for example, a cancelled class. It this feature is used continuously, it will have less impact and may annoy staff and students who have changed their settings to avoid receiving a considerable amount of individual emails.

Further information, please contact hub@qmu.ac.uk.

Dynamic link to timetable from Hub modules

It is possible to add a live link from within a Hub module to the module’s specific timetable in CelCat. Many tutors have already added a link and this have proven very popular with students.

This link is dynamic and updates daily to show any potential changes to the module timetable. When clicking on the link, the learner can either view the timetable for the module for the academic year or can view the timetable for the current week. Students only need to be logged into the Hub to access this link; they do not need to be logged into Citrix/remote desktop.

To add a link to the timetable from your Hub module, click here for details:

Please email hub@qmu.ac.uk, if you would like further information.

Posting announcements prior to 10th September

As you are getting your Hub modules ready for student access on 10th September it may be that you decide to set up an announcement which you would like students to see when they first enter the module. If so, it is highly recommended that you put a post date of 10th September on the announcement so that it will be displayed on that date. Students do not have access to most teaching modules before this date.

The Announcements panels on the My Hub page and student notifications page within a module by default display announcements posted in the last 7 days. If you create an announcement before 10th Sepetember then by putting a post date of 10th September you will ensure that the announcement is visible and recognised as a new announcement in the notifications panels.

Student view tool in the Hub

Since our recent upgrade of The Hub, there have been on-going issues which have impacted on the Student View tool. This tool provides staff with a simulated view of how your module area appears to students. We have been working with Blackboard to resolve this issue but in the meantime, Student View will no longer be available to tutors.

By turning edit mode off, this will provide you with an indication of how a student will view your module. You will still be able to view Course Management tools in the menu bar which is never visible to students.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused while we try to resolve this issue. We will update staff as soon as possible on progress.
